"Hi, folks -- Here are some of the headlines created by small groups during the Engaging a Diverse Community seminar. Remember, these are the headlines we wanted to see in print, celebrating the long and hard work of our companies in community engagement 10-20 years from now: “Mayor calls opera indispensable force of good to community” “Education Department no..."

"Hello, folks! I wanted to bring your attention to coverage of a lecture given at Dartmouth by Dr. Doris Sommer, the Ira Jewell Williams Professor of Romance Languages and Literatures and Director of Graduate Studies in Spanish at Harvard University. In her talk (entitled "Welcome Back: The Humanities as Civic Education"), Dr. Sommer emphasized the need for teachers and everyday le..."

"Good point -- it's important to be clear on how we use the words audience (my def: ticket buyers / butts in seats) and community (my def: people in your neighborhood/town/city/state/etc). Also important -- being clear on the difference between audience development (my def: increasing ticket sales and attendance figures) and community engagement (my def: increasing the company's percei..."

"This is really interesting -- do you find that your audience has changed since you started shifting away from the L-word? And (or?) do you find that your approach to the work and to programming has changed since making that conscious decision?"

If you don't have the time to click th..."

"C'mon -- you know you remember the song from Mister Rogers! One of the great things about the panelists in this session is they've each found ways to be good operatic neighbors. No, it doesn't mean baking a cake for the new kids on the block, but it does mean figuring out who those people are -- who's coming to your performances? Who's participating in your programs? Why..."

"I am so glad that we're doing a session on this topic, and I know I'm not the only one who has been keeping an eye on the great work being done by HGOco and through programs like Cincinnati Opera's Opera Goes to Church! Who else (opera companies or otherwise) are you following for their work in community engagement?"

We'll be joined by three exceptionally strong panelists, each of whom brings a unique perspective to the conversation: Diana Hossack, Professional Development Director National MultiCultural Institute David C. Howse, Executive Director Boston Children's Chorus ..."
